Mindfulness at De Groene Poort Oost
I met Simone and Mariette at De Groene Poort Oost in the spring of 2025. They’ve been involved for some time as core team members tending to this beautiful, developing landscape. During our conversation, we also touched on volunteering—doing something that uses De Groene Poort Oost as a connecting element.
For a moment I was a bit worried that I would be asked to work on the greenery – not my strongest suit with my two left hands – but to my own surprise I suggested that I could perhaps organise something with Mindfulness.

To my surprise (and delight), the response was enthusiastic. We decided to get started right away: schedule dates, find a quiet location, and post announcements in the newsletter and on social media. The question was, ofcourse: would anyone actually show up?
The result: five one-hour sessions on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings in August. Sometimes as many as sixteen residents participated. We practiced simply being mindful: being in the present with what you think, hear, feel, and experience, sitting on a mat, cushion, or chair, sometimes mindfulness in movement. Just being. In silence.
Pleasant feelings, unpleasant thoughts, back or leg pain, almost falling asleep, humor. Anything could be there.
Participants came from all walks of life: familiar faces and strangers, experienced Mindfulness or Yoga practitioners, and people who had never heard of Mindfulness; young and old, men and women. A perfect reflection of the neighborhood, perhaps even of society as a whole.
What struck me most was the dedication and curiosity of the participants. Their willingness to explore their own experiences and to listen to those of others. There was recognition, patience, and respect—no one judged, everyone gave each other space.
All the planned sessions went ahead: in the sun, but also in the drizzle, with the real ‘diehards’.
As far as I’m concerned, this experiment was a success and leaves me wanting more. I’m looking forward to the summer of 2026! Feel free to join in!

Participant’s feedback
I participated in the Mindfulness training. I enjoyed the instructor’s calm, persuasive approach. In a short time, I learned and absorbed several things that helped me further on my learning path and that I will continue to use in the future. I also experienced some special moments as a result.
All in all, highly recommended for beginners and advanced students.
