How it started

The Groene Poort Oost is an initiative of a group of residents from Scharn and Heer. In 2021, we started to transform the former football fields into a publicly accessible, multifunctional, biodiverse and colourful park for young and old. At the time, we had no idea how long it would take, but we knew what it should become: a meeting place for the ‘neighbours’ from Scharn and Heer, as well as Maastricht residents from other districts. A place where they could relax, discover nature and enjoy it together. After the football canteen was demolished and the contaminated soil was remediated, we turned a bare and straight site into a park with height differences and biodiversity. We received more and more help from volunteers.
